Internet culture is changing the English language

 



Did you know that on August 18th, 2025 Cambridge Dictionary added over 6,000 new words!
 
They only add words that they think will have staying power, that are widely used, and likely to persist in the language. This includes words from various categories, such as pop culture, technology, social trends, and even slang.
 
Here are some new computer-related terms that have recently been added to dictionaries.
  1. Mouse jiggler: A device or software that simulates mouse movement to keep a computer active, often used in remote work settings. 

  1. Generative AI: This refers to artificial intelligence designed to produce text, images, audio, or other outputs based on training data. 

  1. Chatbot: A computer program that simulates human conversation to provide information or assistance to users. 

  1. GPT: An abbreviation for "generative pre-trained transformer," a type of machine learning algorithm used in creating new text. 

  1. Hallucinate: In the context of AI, this term describes when an AI system generates false or nonsensical information. 

  1. Clickbait: Content designed to attract attention and encourage clicks, often at the expense of accuracy or quality. 

  1. NSFW: An acronym for "not safe for work," indicating content that may be inappropriate for viewing in a professional or public setting. 

  1. GIF: A common image file format that supports both static and animated images. 

  1. Botnet: A network of computers controlled by a malicious actor to perform tasks without the knowledge of the owners. 

  1. Broligarchy: A portmanteau of "bro" and "oligarchy," referring to a powerful group of men, especially in the tech industry.
